Each summer, Wright Scholars and other summer interns work on challenge problems. This program results in a prototype for the sponsor's simulation and modeling needs, while also providing students valuable STEM experience. The 8-week Summer STEM program at the GRILL is a great opportunity for teams of 3-4 students to learn new technologies, gain key STEM skills, and present their challenge problem to the public at the end of the program. Please review the guidance below and submit your challenge problem via the Google form, Microsoft Form, or contact us for other ways to submit.
To be considered for summer 2026, please submit your challenge problems by COB 27 March 2026. Any challenge problems submitted after this will be considered for the following year.
Guidance for Challenge Problems:
Clear and concise goal
Feasible within 8-weeks (prototype or proof of concept)
Use of AR/VR technologies or game engines
A POC to work with the students and act as the customer
No monetary or equipment requirement (excluding equipment we already have and equipment you are willing to provide for us)
Aerospace
Our aerospace simulators replicate many of the complexities of real-world aerospace environments such as unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operations and space environments.
Cognitive
Our cognitive simulators offer training and assessment tools designed to mimic human cognitive processes in a controlled environment.
Live Virtual Constructive
Our Live Virtual Constructive Simulators and blended training environments create a comprehensive training experience using various tools such as mixed reality.
Maintenance
Many of our maintenance simulators focus on providing technicians with the ability to practice and refine their skills in a low pressure environment, including extended reality step-by-step guides to perform maintenance routines with on-the-job overlays.
Medical and Safety
Our medical and safety simulators offer immersive training experiences that may be in limited supply or that have a high failure rate.
Operational Training
These trainers provide warfighters with realistic, hands-on simulations that replicate the conditions and challenges of real-world operational environments.
Wargaming
Wargaming provides a unique and powerful mental workout with skills that transfer to real-world scenarios. The GRILL team has collaborated with Headquarters Air Force (HAF), Air Force Research Lab (AFRL), and the Curtis E. LeMay Center at Air University to blend elements of gamification and serious gaming educational content in virtual games.
